December 04, 2012

But my dear it's worth the pain, when they're pulling your insides out..

December has crept upon us once again burying all traces of autumn in its wake and bringing with it cold mornings, bleak skies and snow. The second day of December was a little bit of a disaster for me as I had the misfortune of slipping and falling down the stairs, at the moment I feel as if I have endured a few rounds of a boxing match! I've got bruises and aches in countless places over my body and a very painful arm, but on the bright side no bones were broken!

My time has been occupied these last few days with a new book, a cosy blanket, our new sofa and countless mugs of hot chocolate which has definitely helped ease my aches and pains! Last year I pre-ordered this beautiful edition of Poe's Gothic short stories, illustrated by one of my favourite artists, Benjamin Lacombe, and I finally received it recently after two release date set backs!

~ Berenice ~

 ~ The Black Cat ~

~ The Island of the Fay ~

~ The Tell-Tale Heart ~

~ The Fall of the House of Usher ~

~ The Oval Portrait ~

~ Morella ~

 ~ Ligeia ~

Lacombe's large eyed and haunted looking illustrations have a certain surreal and eerie quality that works so well alongside Poe's tales of madness, murder and melancholy! With that same delightfully creepy edge that all of Poe's stories have, I honestly can't imagine another illustrator I'd be more excited to see lending imagery to these classically horrific tales! I particularly love those for Morella and Ligeia and I'm planning on making a copy of the picture above to hang in my living room! ♥

Other than my little trip down the stairs, December has brought with it plenty of things to keep me in high spirits, the first being our beautiful Christmas tree which we put up on the eve of December, I've been spending as much time as possible soaking in the festive atmosphere under the glow of twinkling lights. Another thing that I am extremely thankful for is that we're finally getting a new carpet laid in the living room this Thursday, which will mark the end of our living room renovation! I cannot express how happy I am with how it has turned out, all the time and effort has definitely paid off and I can't wait to share the before and after pictures!

Happy December everybody!

  1. Ah honey sorry about your fall, glad you are on the mend in a cozy warm home full of holiday cheer! These illustrations are gorgeous and that one of the girl and the owl will look spectacular up in your house! Can't wait to see the great reveal!

    1. Thanks so much Krista! I am trying to keep as cosy as possible since the snow hit us yesterday! As much as I think snow looks pretty, I was hoping it would hold off for a little longer this year, a few more weeks at least! I have found the perfect frame amongst my collection to house Ligeia, I know she'll feel right at home! ~♥~

  2. I am sorry you fell down the stairs. I am very clumsy and I am always falling down and running into things, so I can definitely sympathise.

That book is gorgeous! I want it now! It reminds me a bit of A Series of Unfortunate Events illustrations, only darker. I already have the complete Poe of course, but I'd love to have the illustrated version.

Ooh ! I long for the day when I get my first taxidermy animal. It may be a while coming because I will need money, and it will have to be kind of cute, in a dead way. I want one of those gryphon or saggitarius composite animals, too, but they are really expensive!

    1. Thank you :) It was quite a scary experience and definitely one I never wish to repeat! It all happened so fast, before I knew it I was at the bottom of the stairs!

I love the illustrations in A Series of Unfortunate Events too, although I only have the first five books so I've not seen them all yet! I also have the complete Poe works illustrated by Harry Clarke but as much as I love his dark intricate style of illustration I think Benjamin Lacombes slightly Low Brow style fits this book so perfectly!

I know just how you feel, I scour eBay quite regularly for Taxidermy, just to see pictures of them is pleasure enough but I've always dreamed of some day owning a great deer head with beautiful antlers and a soft white snowy owl! I think I would need to win the lottery first though! ~♥~

  4. Oh, no! I'm so sorry to hear about your fall! I can imagine how achey you must be feeling, but curling up with hot chocolate and Poe sounds like the perfect remedy! The illustrations in your Poe book are gorgeous and they will make lovely pictures for your wall. It's fabulous that your renovation is finished. Can't wait for the pics! Feel better soon! ❤

    1. As little movement as possible is what my arms needs right now so the sofa is the perfect place to curl up! It is particularly inviting right now since it has been snowing all day! I don't even want to step outside the front door with fear of slipping and falling on some icy pavement of death! It does look pretty though so I'll just admire it from the comfort and warmth of the house! ~♥~

  5. I'm sorry to hear about your fall! That sounds like a scary and painful experience. I'm just glad that your injuries weren't worse. People can break and sprain all kinds of things falling down the stairs! At least you have some quality entertainment for your downtime. I really like the illustrations in your Poe book, and of course the stories are a good read. Maybe the best part is that 'D' with the skull on it. I'm really looking forward to seeing some photos of your house!

    1. Thanks Justine :) I know I was very lucky! I wasn't sure my arm was okay when it happened, it hurt like hell! Pyf asked if I wanted to go to A&E but I wanted to leave it for a bit to see if the pain subsided (I didn't want to waste mine and their time at A&E!) Luckily it did but leaving me with a little swelling, a big angry bruise and carpet burn. It's still very tender to touch but it could have been worse!

I will be taking pictures as soon as it is 100% complete! I still need to hang all my frames and put all my treasures out but that bit will be fun! ~♥~

  6. Sorry about your fall! That must have hurt a lot. But a Benjamin Lacombe illustrations book may compensate for the pain a little bit, right :)?

    1. I know, I know! I just want to cut them all out of the book to frame but that would be a bad idea! I'll just have to copy the ones I really like. I wish I could have a room filled with Benjamin Lacombe illustrations from floor to ceiling! ~♥~

  8. It's such a shame there are only few books illustrated by Lacombe available in English :( I'm desperate to read Grimoire de sorcières, but all I can do for now is make my eyes happy by looking at the pictures :)

    1. Oh I know! It really sucks! I have messaged his official Facebook page in the past asking if Grimoire de sorcières will ever be published in English but sadly got no reply! :( I was really hoping hoping that it will be but I just got too impatient and ended up putting it on my Christmas list this year. I don't care if I have to type every single page into Google translate, I am having that book! The illustrations are enough of a reason by themselves but it would be nice to understand the story! ~♥~

  12. I love Benjamin Lacombe too. I haven't got the Poe book yet (it's been on my wishlist for a while) but I have got Blanche Neige which is also beautifully illustrated.

  14. I fell down the stairs earlier this year, and it really shook me up. I was aching for quite a while after. I sure hope you are okay and on the mend now.

  15. What gorgeous illustrations, I love the veiled woman and the Island of the Fay. I'm so glad to hear your house is coming together, I'm sure your place looks absolutely stunning. Taxidermy critters are hard to come by, I've been on the search myself. Careful on those stairs <3
